Ashfall Chronicle drops you into a kingdom slowly being buried under volcanic ash, and the tone stays consistently grim without getting miserable. Combat is turn-based, with a timeline you can read and manipulate — slow an enemy, speed up your healer, that kind of thing.
The real depth is in the party. Each of the dozen recruitable characters plays differently enough that swapping one in changes your whole approach to a fight. I spent a good evening just retooling my lineup before a boss and genuinely looked forward to it.
It's not a short game, and the mid-game has a bit of a grind wall, but the writing kept me going. Side quests actually have little stories attached, which is rarer than it should be on mobile.
